Using sociological theories of taste pioneered by Pierre Bourdieu, the paper shows how the dominant name auteurs of Korea, particularly Park Chan-wook and Lee Chang-dong, were established through international festivals, beginning in the 1990s but exploding in the 2000s, at the same time as Korean films began to compete with and surpass Hollywood films at the local box office. These filmmakers were shaped by the changing ideas of art cinema globally, as theorized by scholars such as David Andrews, and the dominance of these figures thus helped shape the domestic festivals, with younger Korean directors often following within these traditions. The rise of the domestic box office helped create an independent cinema within the country, not unlike the emergence of indie cinema in the United States during the blockbuster era, which had the consequence of both increasing opportunities for young directors while often pigeon-holing them into narrow niches."]

While post-apocalyptic fictions of previous eras largely served as cautionary tales – against nuclear brinksmanship in On the Beach(1959) or weaponised biology in The Stand (1978) – today’s versions of these tales depict less alterable, more oblique and diffuse visions of our doom. So why can’t we seem to get enough of humanity’s unavoidable collapse and its bleak aftermath? "]

Detachment (USA: Tony Kaye, 2011: 98 mins)

Tony Kaye's Detachment is a powerful meditation on teacher-cogs and disadvantaged students caught in the corporatizing, underfunded, bureaucratic educational system. Told through the viewpoint of a long term substitute teacher caught in his own mind, who slowly opens up to the world in his slow awakening as a result of his interaction with two youths (one in his class and one on the streets). I particularly appreciated the glimpses into the minds (literally) of many of the main characters and slipstream manner of the narration. One of the best films about teaching I have seen, especially as it develops the main character as a fully fleshed out, problematic and conflicted force in a chaotic environment, not the stereotypical heroic force of simplistic Hollywood feel good teaching movies or the simplistic bad apple that privatized education advocates seek to portray teachers as. Besides being a great film of teaching and students, it is universal in its portrayal of workers struggling make sense and make a difference (or not) in an uncaring system/institution. It is difficult to communicate to people who do not teach the emotional havoc of this profession ... a good attempt to do so... -- Michael Dean Benton (November 17, 2018)

A dense and occasionally poetic chamber piece… Shawn acutely conveys a character whose wickedness, which can be both flagrant and underhanded, is as towering as the weakness that consumes him during his last breaths, painting the portrait of a man who’s both remarkably self-consumed and constantly racked by fear and guilt. (Lisa Joyce’s) scenes opposite Shawn are among the film’s richest, filled with a mix of lust and loathing, while creating a sense of disembodiment that will haunt the final acts.” – Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter]

In 2003, the director went to US-occupied Baghdad and shot his first feature-length documentary “Nice Bombs.” Part political non-fiction and part video diary, the movie is both a layered look at the Iraq War and a unique, intimate look at a place (and people) that are unfortunately not offered such a profile in other films observing the post-9/11 world. ... Afterwards Alshaibi made a number of short films and hit another pulse with his second documentary “American Arab” which deals with bigotry in the US. The filmmaker profiles a number of people, discussing their day-to-day experience when everyone thinks you’re the enemy. A considerable portion of the movie also details the brutal assault that Alshaibi experienced, himself a victim of racism. At the moment the director is preparing his third feature, “Boy From War,” which will look back on his time living in Iraq during their war with Iran, and it will feature animation similar to “Waltz With Bashir.” On the podcast we spoke about the negative perception of Arabs and Muslims, film and TV’s role in perpetuating it, the exhaustion of fighting it, filmmaking as a father, and the power of animation."]

Bands and artists such as Eddie Vedder, King Buzzo (The Melvins), Mudhoney, L7 and Butch Vig all line up not only to sing the Psychos' praises, but to tell their own personal stories from the road travelling with the band. They all convincingly state the case that the Seattle Grunge sound started in Melbourne with the Cosmic Psychos. Director Matt Weston has combined interviews about tales on the road and hedonism with fatherhood, weightlifting, dealing with divorce, tragedy, bondage.....and tractors. Yes, the band might seem to have the usual Spinal Tap type hijinks (don't fall asleep when your bandmate has a salmon in his suitcase), but this film does far more to show a tale of real people and the human influence the leave as well as the music influence."]

Imagine no further because Maurice is joined by Hank Hellman to do just that. The notions of friendship, being an outsider, sticking it to parents (not always deservedly) and chocolate ice cream are all universal themes, so the gents qualify to discuss Lukas Moodyson's 2013 film based on a graphic novel by his wife Coco. The film is funny, honest, scattered, and most importantly realistic. This is not a Steven Spielberg tale of growing up and "learning something" in the dying moments. It's about 3 friends having fun, getting jealous, not always doing the right thing by each other, and standing up for themselves in small ordinary ways....you know....real life!!!!"]

Enelow, Shonni. "The Great Recession: Restrained but resilient, a style of acting has taken hold that speaks to an era’s anxieties."  Film Quarterly (September-October 2016) ["This is another way to read the emotional withdrawal or refusal in these performances: as a response to a violent or chaotic environment, one that doesn’t offer an alternate vision of an open and embracing future. For even when representing an alienating or unfeeling world, actors of earlier eras generally appealed to the camera and their audiences to receive their feelings and implicitly trusted them to respond generously, either through vicarious sentiment or humanist compassion. Expressive acting—of which Method acting is one dominant form—is built on the conviction that audiences want an actor’s emotions to be in some way available to them. There’s a basic optimism in that conviction: the optimism that the world would be better if we all told each other the truth about what we feel. In contrast, many of today’s most lauded American film actors give performances that evince no such optimism about emotional expression. Returning to Winter’s Bone, for example, it’s clear that within the fiction of the film, Ree doesn’t trust the world to care about her well-being. But rather than contrast her character’s suspicion with an appeal to the (presumably) sympathetic film audience, Lawrence maintains her wariness throughout. Likewise, Mara doesn’t cut Lisbeth’s lowered gaze and near-inaudible, clipped speech with any revelation or outburst that would make us think she could be—or really is, deep down—other than she appears. There aren’t hidden motivations in these performances, and in fact, close to no subtext (the idea of subtext, with its inherently psychological schema, is parodied in Carol by a would-be writer who takes notes on the difference between what characters in movies say and what they really feel)."]

Small, Courtney, et al. "The Midnight Swim." Changing Reels #7 (December 2, 2016) ["Sarah Adina Smith’s The Midnight Swim is not a film that can easily be summarized. At its core it is a family drama about the connection between three half-sisters and their mother who has mysteriously gone missing. However, it also features elements from the found footage genre, a wonderful musical number, a shawl that is downright creepy, and deep questions about the transcendent nature of death. Needless to say there is a lot to chew on in this episode. We also discuss our short films picks of the week: Donato Sansone’s Journal Anime and Ben Brand’s Life is Beautiful."]

But usually the underlying assumption in these discussions is that capitalism is a monolithic entity—one that has stood, intact and still, in the same form, for a couple of centuries. The history of economics tells us otherwise. There have in fact been many capitalisms over the years. For example, the Keynesian “controlled capitalism” that took hold in the years of the New Deal, to help relieve national economic suffering in the U.S. during the Great Depression, was quite different from the more rapacious, unregulated capitalism that had reigned a few decades earlier.  Since around 1980, we have been witnessing the rise of a new breed of capitalism, neoliberalism, which is achieving global domination with the unwavering agenda of reducing taxes on corporations and the rich, massively deregulating industries, slashing public spending on social programs, and “liberalizing” labor markets (code for giving companies free rein in their hiring and firing decisions). This model of capitalism, after steady escalation over three decades, has now become firmly entrenched in our lives, workplaces, and cultures. And it is on the social and economic repercussions arising from it that the Dardennes have been turning their camera. Their belief is clear: by creating new and indelible images of this virulent model, we can fight it, laying the ground from which a newer, more just social-economic form can grow."]

The Wonders (Italy/Switzerland/Germany: Alice Rohrwacher, 2014: 110 mins)
Winner of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, Rohrwacher’s vivid story of teenage yearning and confusion revolves around a beekeeping family in rural central Italy: German-speaking father, Italian mother, four girls. Two unexpected arrivals prove disruptive, especially for the pensive oldest daughter, Gelsomina. The father takes in a troubled teenage boy as part of a welfare program, and a television crew shows up to enlist local farmers in a kitschy celebration of Etruscan culinary traditions (a slyly self-mocking Monica Bellucci plays the bewigged host). Louvart’s lensing combines a documentary attention to daily ritual with an evocative atmosphere of mystery to conjure a richly concrete world that is subject to the magical thinking of adolescence. -- The Female Gaze (2018)
