Breathless (France: Jean-Luc Godard, 1960) Criterion: "There was before Breathless, and there was after Breathless. Jean-Luc Godard burst onto the film scene in 1960 with this jazzy, free-form, and sexy homage to the American film genres that inspired him as a writer for Cahiers du cinéma. With its lack of polish, surplus of attitude, anything-goes crime narrative, and effervescent young stars Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg, Breathless helped launch the French New Wave and ensured that cinema would never be the same."
The Magnificent Seven (USA: John Sturges, 1960) MB: A classic Western that literally lifts its storyline from legendary director Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece The Seven Samurai (1954) and plops down in the mythical American West. While not as cinematically impressive as the former, it still impresses with a fast-paced engaging narrative, tight action scenes, and some of the coolest actors of the time at their peak.
Psycho (USA: Alfred Hitchcock, 1960) MB: MB: It is difficult to overstate the impact this film had at the time of its release and its continuing influence. Innovative narrative structure, rewriting of the horror genre for modern times (well for that time), and a clear example of Alfred Hitchcock's directing style. Anthony Perkin's acting was so memorable that he was haunted by the role afterward. My mom told me she had nightmares for weeks after seeing this film in the theater as a young woman.
Shoot the Piano Player (France: Francois Truffaut, 1960) Criterion: "François Truffaut is drunk on the possibilities of cinema in this, his most playful film. Part thriller, part comedy, part tragedy, Shoot the Piano Player relates the adventures of mild-mannered piano player Charlie (Charles Aznavour, in a triumph of hangdog deadpan) as he stumbles into the criminal underworld and a whirlwind love affair. Loaded with gags, guns, clowns, and thugs, this razor-sharp homage to the American gangster film is pure nouvelle vague."
Spartacus (USA: Stanley Kubrick, 1960) Criterion: "Stanley Kubrick directed a cast of screen legends—including Kirk Douglas as the indomitable gladiator that led a Roman slave revolt—in the sweeping epic that defined a genre and ushered in a new Hollywood era. The assured acting, lush Technicolor cinematography, bold costumes, and visceral fight sequences won Spartacus four Oscars; the blend of politics and sexual suggestion scandalized audiences. Today Kubrick's controversial classic, the first film to openly defy Hollywood's blacklist, remains a landmark of cinematic artistry and history."
Virgin Spring (Sweden: Ingmar Bergman, 1960) Criterion: "Winner of the Academy Award for best foreign-language film, Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring is a harrowing tale of faith, revenge, and savagery in medieval Sweden. With austere simplicity, the director tells the story of the rape and murder of the virgin Karin, and her father Töre’s ruthless pursuit of vengeance against the three killers. Starring Max von Sydow and photographed by the brilliant Sven Nykvist, the film is both beautiful and cruel in its depiction of a world teetering between paganism and Christianity." It was the inspiration for Wes Craven's 1972 American film The Last House on the Left.
Yojimbo (Japan: Akira Kurosawa, 1961) Criterion: "The incomparable Toshiro Mifune stars in Akira Kurosawa's visually stunning and darkly comic Yojimbo. To rid a terror-stricken village of corruption, wily masterless samurai Sanjuro turns a range war between two evil clans to his own advantage. Remade twice, by Sergio Leone and Walter Hill, this exhilarating genre-twister remains one of the most influential and entertaining films of all time."
Harakiri (Japan: Masaki Kobayashi, 1962) Criterion: "Following the collapse of his clan, an unemployed samurai (Tatsuya Nakadai) arrives at the manor of Lord Iyi, begging to be allowed to commit ritual suicide on the property. Iyi’s clansmen, believing the desperate ronin is merely angling for a new position, try to force his hand and get him to eviscerate himself—but they have underestimated his beliefs and his personal brand of honor. Winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize, Harakiri, directed by Masaki Kobayashi is a fierce evocation of individual agency in the face of a corrupt and hypocritical system."
Ivan's Childhood (Soviet Union: Andrei Tarkovsky, 1962) Criterion: "The debut feature by the great Andrei Tarkovsky, Ivan’s Childhood is a poetic journey through the shards and shadows of one boy’s war-ravaged youth. Moving back and forth between the traumatic realities of World War II and serene moments of family life before the conflict began, Tarkovsky’s film remains one of the most jarring and unforgettable depictions of the impact of war on children."
Jules and Jim (France: Francois Truffaut, 1962) Criterion: "Hailed as one of the finest films ever made, Jules and Jim charts, over twenty-five years, the relationship between two friends and the object of their mutual obsession. La Jetée (France: Chris Marker, 1962) Criterion: "Chris Marker, filmmaker, poet, novelist, photographer, editor, and now videographer and digital multimedia artist, has been challenging moviegoers, philosophers, and himself for years with his complex queries about time, memory, and the rapid advancement of life on this planet. Marker's La Jetée is one of the most influential, radical science-fiction films ever made, a tale of time travel told in still images." MB: La Jetée is haunted by Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958) and served as the inspiration for Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys (1995).Lolita (UK/USA: Stanley Kubrick, 1962) Rotten Tomatoes: "Kubrick's Lolita adapts its seemingly unadaptable source material with a sly comedic touch and a sterling performance by James Mason that transforms the controversial novel into something refreshingly new without sacrificing its essential edge."
The Great Escape (USA: John Sturges, 1963) Rotten Tomatoes: "With its impeccably slow-building story and a cast for the ages, The Great Escape is an all-time action classic. ... Imprisoned during World War II in a German POW camp, a group of Allied soldiers are intent on breaking out, not only to escape, but also to draw Nazi forces away from battle to search for fugitives. The Organizer (Italy: Mario Monicelli, 1963) Criterion: "In turn-of-the-twentieth-century Turin, an accident in a textile factory incites workers to stage a walkout. But it’s not until they receive unexpected aid from a traveling professor (Marcello Mastroianni) that they find their voice, unite, and stand up for themselves.
